The model-holder

When an AI does the execution, the job left for you is to hold the model of what is being built and why. That job is four moves, and each is a thing that can be drawn.

Eight drawings that draw themselves, a minute each. Twice in every lesson the pen stops and asks what happens next; you press 1, 2 or 3, and the drawing answers. Committing before it resolves is what makes it stick.

1 · name the stock

  1. 01
    stocks and flows

A stock changes only through its flows, and a loop decides whether it holds or runs away.

  2. 02
    delay

A loop with a delay overshoots; acting again before the stock has moved is how.

2 · find the constraint

  1. 03
    the constraint

Throughput is set by the narrowest stage; widening any other only grows the pile in front of it.

  2. 04
    the question

A competent executor finds the best path to wherever you point; the work is placing the destination and the boundary.

3 · cut at the connector

  1. 05
    the cut

Cut work where an interface can be named, not where the pieces look equal.

  2. 06
    the band

Direction lives in a band: too vague loses the intent, too specified means you did the work in prose.

4 · check the fit

  1. 07
    the gauge

Make the check from the model before seeing the output; a polished output changes what looks acceptable.

  2. 08
    the loop

A failed check changes the execution; a passed check that still worsens the stock changes the model.
